S’African women protest against Zuma ‘sex act’ painting

Female supporters of South African President Jacob Zuma on Friday marched through the capital Pretoria to defend him against attacks including a satirical painting depicting him engaged in a sex act.
Several hundred members of African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) rallied outside the Union Buildings, the official seat of the government.

The ANC Women's League held its march to demonstrate its loyalty to Zuma, who was recently depicted in the graphic painting by a local artist Ayanda Mabulu.
"The painting denigrates the president, not just him, but women as well, given how a woman is portrayed," Toko Xasa, ANCWL spokeswoman, told AFP.
"We can't allow that to happen."
An ANCWL statement before the march attacked "the portrayal of the President's genitals in the mouth of a woman," and said the event would celebrate Zuma's role in transforming the country since apartheid.
"We, therefore, stand firm in saying 'hands off President Zuma' as the leader of the (ANC) organisation and father of the nation," it said.
Entitled "The Pornography of Power", the brightly coloured painting depicts Zuma in a sex act surrounded by symbols and characters that the artist said represent rape, colonialism, slavery and exploitation.

Mabulu, the artist, defended his work and said that the protest was misguided.
"These women are protecting and defending someone who is raping the country," he told AFP. "They should be protesting to protect the victims."
Outrage over the painting, which first featured in the local media two weeks ago, echoed a similar dispute in 2012 over "The Spear", a painting that showed Zuma with exposed genitals.
That image triggered fury from the ANC, which described it as "indecent, racist, disrespectful and an abuse of freedom of expression".

The painting, by Brett Murray, was the subject of court cases and was vandalised at a Johannesburg gallery.

Members loudly cheered to calls made by various leaders, saying the president is a father too and elderly men must be respected in African culture.
Thousands of women in green dresses marched to the Union Buildings to raise various issues of concern but most importantly to defend the dignity of the president.

The league says in the past all presidents who led the ANC, like Oliver Tambo, were defended no matter what and Zuma is included.

Members will be handing over a memorandum to a government representative.

ANCWL President Bathabile Dlamini has defended the movement's decision to march to defend Zuma's dignity.

California doctor convicted in overdose deaths of 3 patients

A Los Angeles-area doctor was convicted Friday of second-degree murder in the deaths of three patients who overdosed on painkillers she prescribed.

The prosecution of Dr. Hsiu-Ying "Lisa" Tseng was a rare murder case against a physician at a time when prescription drug abuse has become an epidemic and lawmakers have tried to make it harder for so-called pill mills to easily dole out medications with little scrutiny.

A dozen of Tseng's patients died, including one who overdosed in her office. Prosecutors only brought three murder charges because of other factors involved in some of those deaths, such as drugs prescribed by other doctors and a possible suicide.

Tseng, 45, was convicted of all but one of 21 drug-related counts. She showed no reaction as the verdicts were being read.

She was also charged with illegally writing prescriptions for two of the deceased patients and 16 other people, including three undercover agents who were investigating whether she easily prescribed pain pills after brief office visits.

Tseng prescribed "crazy, outrageous amounts of medication" to patients who didn't need the pills, Deputy District Attorney John Niedermann told jurors in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The doctor repeatedly ignored warning signs even after several patients died as she built a new medical clinic in Rowland Heights with the money she made from them.
"I know this is going to kill them, but I don't care because I have a business to run," Niedermann said in summing up the doctor's attitude.
"Something is wrong with what you're doing if your patients are dying," he said.
Tseng's lawyer said her client naively trusted her patients. Defense lawyer Tracy Green said patients testified they were legitimately in pain and later became dependent on the drugs, hiding their addictions by seeing other doctors and picking up prescriptions from different pharmacies.

Green conceded the doctor had provided a prescription to a patient's husband and said she should be convicted of that felony. However, Green said prosecutors had failed to prove that Tseng was guilty of anything else and should be cleared of the murder counts and drug charges.
"After she deals with punishment on that one count she can go home to her children," Green said.
Jurors had the option of convicting Tseng of involuntary manslaughter.

Vu Nguyen, 29, of Lake Forest, Steven Ogle, 25, of Palm Desert, and Joseph Rovero, 21, an Arizona State University student from San Ramon, died of overdoses between March and December 2009.
Tseng barely kept any records on the three men until she was contacted by the Medical Board of California. She then fabricated records to make it look like she kept thorough records of diagnoses and noted she was weaning them off drugs, Niedermann said.

Tseng ignored pleas from family members of patients who demanded she stop prescribing drugs to them, Niedermann said.

He said Tseng should have known her patients were prone to abuse because they were returning for refills before they should have run out of pills.
"If you give someone who claims to be a drug abuser the very drug they abuse and they overdose and die, that's a likely foreseeable outcome," Niedermann said. "But for her these people would not have died."

Cross River Govt suspend Perm. Secs. over suspension of morning devotion in schools

The Cross River State government has indefinitely suspended the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Education Anne Odey, who last week released a statement suspending all forms of morning devotion in schools across the country.
The State Security Adviser (SSA) to Governor Ben Ayade, Jude Ngaji who made this known to newsmen yesterday in Calabar, explained that indeed the state police commissioner, Henry Fadairo, had contacted the state ministry of Education about a possible attack by Boko haram members during early morning and afternoon devotions in various schools.

Ngaji said the permanent secretary unilaterally took the decision of suspending the age long practice of morning devotions in the state, without consulting the state governor.
"The governor has directed that the permanent secretary be suspended indefinitely while the ban on suspension of devotion has been lifted immediately. It is true that police got intelligence information that Boko Haram is planning to bomb schools during morning devotions and therefore directed authorities in the Ministry of Education to act fast.
But the permanent secretary did not bother to refer to the governor or call for stakeholders’ meeting to that effect.
So, the governor feels pained that the permanent secretary got such sensitive information without seeking for his advice and went ahead to issue directive suspending morning devotions in schools," he said.
He added that the governor is a strong believer in God and will not do anything that will prevent people from worshiping God.

Wife accused of hiring assassins to kill her husband so she could inherit his weath

Mr Polycarp Okumu, a Mombasa based tycoon has taken his wife to court after she hired hit-men to murder him so that she can inherit his wealth. Ms Rose Adhiambo and her house help, Ms Doris Akinyi, allegedly hired hitmen to kill Mr Okumu at Beach Road estate in Mombas. She was detained by police for 10 days.

Police Constable Dominic Kiptum told a Mombasa court that the two suspects and their accomplices conspired to kill Mr Ouma on diverse dates between October 20 and 26.

The wealthy businessman also known by the alias Kamili, claims that he caught his wife red handed withdrawing Ksh 1.2 million at Kenyan Commercial Bank, Naivas Branch in Nyali, which was to be used to pay the assassins. Rose was arrested at the bank while trying to contact the killers so that they can pick the money and execute the evil mission. It was also alleged she had made a previous attempt to kill her husband by poisoning but he miraculously survived.

Resident Magistrate Viola Yator allowed an application for the two accused to be detained at Bamburi Police Station.

The two suspects, however, did not object to the application to enable police to complete their investigations.

The magistrate ordered that Ms Adhiambo and Ms Akinyi be detained at Bamburi Police Station until November 9, when the case will be mentioned.
