Police in Italy have arrested more than 20 alleged members of a dangerous Nigerian mafia gang called the Black Axe.
The suspects are accused of indulging in protection and prostitution rackers, drug dealing and human trafficking.
They were apprehended after a member of the gang became an informant and revealed the secrets of the criminal network, including the identities of senior members.
The anti-mafia squad in Palermo, Sicily, who carried out the nationwide operation, were able to pick up the head of the group’s Italian operation in Padua.
In recent months, there have also been arrests in Torino and Milan.
According to reports, the Black Axe have forged links with the Italian mafia, the Cosa Nosta and the gangsters import drugs which are then distributed by the Nigerians.
The rise of the criminal syndicate, has been linked to increase in migrants crossing over from North Africa.

Atiku counters Buhari, says Boko Haram insurgents not defeated yet
A former Vice President and stalwart of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Atiku Abubakar, on Saturday disagreed with the position of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government that Boko Haram terrorists have been defeated.
The Turakin Adamawa, who spoke in Yola, the Adamawa capital, at the 11th Founder’s Day Ceremony of the American University of Nigeria, AUN, averred that the terrorist group remained deadly.
“The insurgents still occupy a specific geographical space. They (Boko Haram) still retain the capacity for occasional deadly attacks. Many citizens in the zone still remain vulnerable and live in fear,” he said.
This comment seem to counter repeated claims by President Muhammadu Buhari and his Information minister, Lai Mohammed, that Boko Haram had been Technically defeated, and was no longer holding any territory in the country.
In his 2016 Democracy Day speech, Buhari had insisted that the sect has been defeated, saying: “We marshaled our neighbours in a joint task force to tackle and defeat Boko Haram. By the end of December 2015, all but pockets and remnants had been routed by our gallant armed forces”.
Before then, Lai Mohammed had stated that the Boko Haram terrorists remain largely decimated, dispersed and disoriented, adding that “in reality, insurgency has been weakened as a cohesive terror force”.
But Atiku, in his Saturday speech, said it was premature for anyone to claim victory over Boko Haram at the moment, adding that, “We cannot say that the problem is over until every displaced person is able to return home, to the office, to the market, to the farm, and resume normal activities
“We cannot say it is over until we rebuild the schools, the churches, the hospitals, the markets, and the homes that had been destroyed. And we cannot say it’s over until the survivors of this insurgency receive the help they need, including psychological therapy to deal with the trauma that they have been through.
“I visited an IDP camp on Saturday and had the privilege of teaching a math class to some children. But the site of hundreds of children running around and unable to attend school was very gut wrenching. It still breaks my heart. So we cannot say the insurgency is over until all the displaced children return to their schools.
“And, as I indicated last year, it would not be enough for people to simply return to their pre-insurgency lives. We must do better than that otherwise we would only have papered over the wound without really treating it.
“People must return to something better, to hope, to improved schools, to improved economic opportunities, to freedom of worship and improved inter-religious harmony.”

Nigerian billionaire, Emeka Offor causes stir as he buries father in N15m gold casket [PHOTOS]
Nigerian billionaire and Chairman of Chrome Group of Companies, Chief Emeka Offor, has got tongues wagging after he buried his late father in a pure gold casket in an elaborate ceremony in Anambra State on Friday.
The event, which took place at the All Saint Anglican Church, Irefi Oraifite area of the state, attracted several dignitaries from all works of life including several clergies and left many present at the burial and beyond to question the rationale behind such a casket.
While some Nigerians are of the opinion that the billionaire is at liberty to spend his money as he likes and in whatever manner he deems fit, others condemned what they described as a waste of money and resources of the part of the billionaire in buying such an expensive casket.
A Facebook user, Gabriel Omonhinmin said the casket is said to have cost a whopping sum of N15m. “Don’t you think Emeka Offor’s father, Benneth would have been much happier in his grave if this money was given as a revolving loan to some youths in that community?”
Another user, Okorie Ikechukwu wrote: “The casket is valueless and useless once itz being lowered into d grave. Emeka shld be mindful of d grave, for d activities of d gold-mongers.”
Manu Vice Mike wrote: “No matter d amount of tin u did to a died man is nothing but a waste cus he doesn’t know that a gasket worthy of millions went to grave with him , so he should bury his dad on a humanitarian ground nd not for publication.. so those of u who r planning to give ur dad an extravagant bury should covert it to him with an extravagant life Style wen he’s still alive rather than expensive gasket as it is not going to make any difference with those buried wit normal gasket.”
Obi Nkechi Agnes wrote: “This corpse would be exhumed very soon by young boys who know the worth of the casket.”

But to show this sort of empty profligacy on a man that has died is rather so shameful.
“What would a gold-plated casket do for the dead man that does not care if he is wrapped in a rag or buried in a casket? Did he give his father a gold-plated lifestyle or life at most? I guess he never had time for the poor man. I know how these fools roll. What sort of madness is this? This man has not impressed me o! He is an idiot just like all of them. RIP dad all the same.”

Femi Fani-Kayode: My encounter with Nnamdi Kanu
In my essay titled “Head Bloodied But Not Bowed And The Ascension Of President-Elect Donald J. Trump” (Part 1) I wrote the following:
“When I went to visit the great and brilliant freedom fighter, Nnamdi Kanu, who is the leader of IPOB and easily the most courageous, powerful and credible Igbo leader in Nigeria today in his cell we had a very instructive and long discussion.
I had never met Nnamdi before and I was amazed at his depth of knowledge, his immense courage and his deep convictions.
There is no doubt in my mind that that man is going places and in him the Igbo have an Ojukwu and a Nnamdi Azikiwe all rolled into one. He is destined for greatness”.
Apparantly my words have created quite a stir amongst those who believe that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu cannot be mentioned in the same breath as Azikiwe or Ojukwu, both of whom, in my view, are also great men.
Yet despite their reservations I believe that we must give honor to whom it is due. Consequently I have no regrets for what I have said.
Those that are upset at the fact that I spoke highly of the IPOB leader are misguided and, worst still, they lack vision, foresight and insight.
They not only lack the ability to perceive individuals and events accurately but they also lack the gift of discermment. They may see the man but they cannot assess or recognise the spirit that is in him and that motivates him.
Worse of all they are suffering from good old fashioned envy and they have been afflicted with the worst form of ignorance.
Most of them have never even met Kanu let alone know him. I sat next to him for three solid hours in the most challenging and difficult circumstances.
We discussed our respective views about Nigeria, our collective history, the suffering and marginalisation of our respective people, the Nigerian civil war, the reptilian and violent nature of the Nigerian state, the present dispensation, the Buhari government and the way forward.
I have associated with, met and worked with many men of influence and power since I entered the combustible fray of politics thirty years ago but this one was different.
This was a man that had what I would describe as a Mahatma Ghandi-like quality. That is to say he is one that is prepared to sacrifice everything and anything for his beliefs, his people and his cause.
Like the great Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace I have no doubt that if he deemed it necessary he would go as far as to sacrifice his very life in the struggle for freedom and independence for his Igbo people from the Nigerian state and from our internal colonial masters and for the establishment of his beloved Biafra.
Not all may agree with him on that course but they must respect his determination, passion and courage.
Very few Nigerian leaders have that level of selflessness and commitment to any cause and, simply put, I admire it.
I looked deeply into his eyes as we spoke and I touched and weighed his soul.
I can tell you, without any fear of contradiction, that he is a profoundly good man who loves his Igbo people deeply.
He is also well-educated and widely-read and he is a formidable intellectual.
We may not have agreed on everything but I can tell you this much: we share an aversion to the spread of radical Islam and terror in Nigeria and indeed throughout the world.
We also share deep concerns about the oppression of our people by the state, the vicious persecution and desperate attempt to silence all the voices of the opposition in our country, the marginalisation and suppression of the good people and ethnic nationalities of the south and the Middle Belt, the implementation of a plainly racist and apartheid-like agenda by our government, the regular and consistent practice of genocide by our security forces, the rise in power and increasing callousness and brutality of the Fulani miltias and herdsmen in our midst, the not so hidden agenda to Islamise our nation and violate the secularity of our state, the violation of court orders, the brazen intimidation of the Judiciary and the resort to the most barbarous and hideous form of gestapo tactics, tyranny and human rights abuses by the Buhari administration.
I can also tell you that he feels and shares the pain of the Igbo and he yearns for their liberation and emanciption from an increasingly hostile and oppressive Nigerian state.
He is not a politician in the true sense of the word but rather a freedom fighter and a charissmatic leader who has managed to inspire millions of Igbo youth all over the world to once again have faith in themselves and their collective cause and aspirations. In my view that is a good thing.
I can also tell you this: he is a man of great faith and conviction and his rise to prominence is not ordinary but instead prophetic.
He cannot be destroyed or silenced by any government or man born of woman because the Lord is with him and He is using him. He is using him to say and do the things that many believe but that are too scared to say or do.

US Blocks Nigeria From Buying Military Aircraft From Brazil
Strong indications have emerged that the United States has again blocked the Federal Government from acquiring fighter ground attack aircraft considered crucial in the ongoing campaign against Boko Haram in the North-East.
A Presidency source said on Saturday that Nigeria and Brazil were almost striking a deal on the acquisition of the light attack aircraft when the US, which produced the aircraft, prevented the deal.
It was gathered that the leadership of the Armed Forces had taken a decision to replace the ailing Alpha jet platform of the Nigerian Air Force with the newer A-29 Super Tucano.
The source said that the Brazilians, who were initially enthusiastic about the deal, suddenly became reluctant.
The source added the US had told the Brazilians, who acquired 99 of the aircraft from the US firm, Embraer Defence System, that the aircraft deal be put on hold due to human rights issues involving the military.
The US had blocked the immediate past administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan from acquiring Boeing CH-47 Chinok helicopters from Israel in January 2015 purportedly due to human rights issues involving the military.
Like the case of the A-29 Super Tucano, the Boeing CH-47 Chinok helicopters were produced by US firms and could only be sold with approval by the Americans.
The latest development has dimmed indications that the US was relaxing the arms embargo on the country with the election of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
US Congressman Darrel Isah had said shortly after a meeting with service chiefs and defence authorities in the country in August 2015 that the US had commenced the process of relaxing the embargo on military assistance to the country under the Leahy Law.
The Leahy Law prohibits the US defence sector from providing military assistance to countries involved in rights violations.
The source added that the US Government was not pleased with measures adopted against those accused of human rights abuse in the operational areas of the North-East.
The source said, “The issue of the arms embargo against the country by the US is still in force. The US is helping in the area of training; they also have some of their platforms like the C130 which is so crucial in the campaign and operations of the military.
“However, the surprising thing is that they have again prevented the country from acquiring A29, Super Tucano light attack aircraft from Brazil.
“The US sold the aircraft to the Brazilians but they gave a condition that they could only be resold to other countries with the consent of the US. This means that Brazil must seek the permission of the US to sell.
“The Brazilians were enthusiastic when they visited Nigeria and the impression we had was that they were ready to sell, provided the funds were available.
“Curiously, they later developed cold feet because America started quoting human rights issues to block the deal.
“The aircraft are unique because the plan was to use the A-29 Super Tucano, Fighter Ground Attack aircraft to replace the ailing Alpha jets.
“The Alpha jets are old now; the Alpha jets and the MI helicopter gunships are the two major platforms deployed in the North-East.”
However, it was said that the US had inspected some facilities of the NAF even though the deal was shrouded in uncertainty.
Our correspondent gathered that the prevailing arms blockade had again compelled the government to look in the direction of Asia and Eastern Europe for arms supply to fight Boko Haram.
It was learnt that the Federal Government had paid for 10 Super Mushak trainers from Pakistan expected to arrived the country by the first week of December 2016.
It was further learnt that plans had reached an advanced stage to bring in 12 MI 35M, one of the latest helicopter gunships from Russia.
It was gathered that pilots and technicians who were sent to Russia for training on the use of the sophisticated helicopters had completed training and had returned to the country to await the arrival of the equipment.
Although the military had not changed the plan to replace the Alpha jets with the A-29 attack helicopters, the government was said to be acquiring the MI35m in phases.

The 35-year-old man, an indigene of Akassa community of Brass LGA of the state, allegedly stole a pot of soup, 12 wraps of fufu and a half basin of garri flour and was arrested by the vigilantes at 2am on Thursday while comfortably consuming some of the stolen wraps of fufu and the soup
Enatimi confessed that hunger and economic hardship led him to steal the pot of soup and the other food items, after which the Paramount Ruler of the area, the Obenibe X1 of Epie Kingdom, King Hope Adike, intervened and asked them to parade him round the community with the stolen items as deterrent to others.
After parading the suspect round the village, Adike ordered that he be released and asked to sin no more.

He said, “We were on patrol at about 2am on Thursday.
“When we got to the Timida School area, we saw a man at a local food joint eating. The food kiosk is owned by an Akwa Ibom indigene popularly called Madam Blessing.”

US president-elect Donald Trump said he planned to immediately deport or jail as many as three million undocumented immigrants, as he set out his priorities in the first television interview since his election.
The interview with CBS's 60 Minutes was broadcast on Sunday, with millions tuning in for clues on how the billionaire businessman-turned-politician will govern the country.
Since Tuesday's election triumph, Trump had appeared to tone down his rhetoric, notably suggesting he might be willing to reconsider a pledge to scrap President Barack Obama's signature health reform, the so-called Obamacare.
He made clear, though, in excerpts of Sunday's interview that he still intended to crack down on undocumented immigrants in the country, focusing on people with criminal records.
"What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers ... probably two million of them, it could be even three ... out of our country, or we are going to incarcerate them," Trump said.
Trump's stance on his deportation plans stood in opposition with comments by House Speaker Paul Ryan, who said on Sunday the focus under a Trump administration would be on securing the border, not rounding up immigrants.
Trump also said he would keep his promise to build a wall along the US border with Mexico, but said part of it could be a fence, as some members of Congress have suggested.
"There could be some fencing," he said in the interview, but in other areas "a wall is more appropriate".
Al Jazeera's Mike Hanna, reporting from Washington DC, said there was no question about having a barrier on the border or not, but the discussion was about what form it would take as Trump had previously insisted it would largely be a physical wall, not a fence.
The issue of a strong border is important for many Republicans, and indeed many Democrats. But the differences are as to what form it takes. There are already fences in large areas of the border at present, which the Congress approved," Hanna said.
"If Donald Trump wants to get his wall, he needs the Republican-majority Congress to approve the expenses for it. He alienated many there during his campaign."
Separately, 50,000 people in the US have signed a petition asking Trump to openly reject hate and bigotry.
It was set up following more than 200 reports of intimidation and harassment since election day. Some of those cases have been highlighted on social media.
Trump's campaign was marked by derogatory comments about race, religion, gender and disability.
However, in his victory speech, he vowed to be a President for "all Americans".

Miss Anambra sex video: You’re a liar, you were conned because of greed – ABS replies Chidinma
The organizers of the Miss Anambra Beauty Pageant, Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, have reacted to Miss Chidinma Okeke’s allegations that she was pressured into making the much publicized lesbian sex video by organisers of the pageant.
Ms. Okeke, in an interview with The Nation, had alleged that the organisers were behind the blackmail video..
Recall that the embattled ex-beauty queen had been entangled in a lesbian sex tape scandal, in a video which has since gone viral on the internet where she was seen having a ‘cozy time’ with her female sex partner, who unconfirmed sources simply identified as Ada.
Recall that the embattled ex-beauty queen had been entangled in a lesbian sex tape scandal, in a video which has since gone viral on the internet where she was seen having a ‘cozy time’ with her female sex partner, who unconfirmed sources simply identified as Ada.
The video shows her on a lesbian act with Ada, who is reportedly one of her close friends and happens to be her personal assistant and also the 3rd runner up at the queen of democracy, 2014..
The Director of ABS, Mr Uche Nworah,in a statement on his Facebook page insisted Ms Okeke lied.
He wrote: “There is an Igbo saying that the more you repeat a lie, at some point people may begin to believe that it is the truth.
“On this former Miss Anambra sex scandal, the management of the Anambra Broadcasting Service had previously released a press statement disassociating the organisation from it. We still stand on that statement.
“We have also made statements on the matter to the law enforcement authorities. We understand that Miss Chidinma Okeke has also made statements to the law enforcement authorities, so we eagerly await their findings.
“It is however important that I correct certain statements that are being made on this forum and in other fora especially concerning the interview Miss Chidinma Okeke granted the Nation newspaper today.
“There appears to be an agenda to push falsehood to the public and in so doing malign me and the Anambra Broadcasting Service over a matter that we know nothing about. It appears that our silence over the matter, except the press statement we issued earlier is now being exploited by those who are bent on using the Miss Anambra sex scandal to settle political scores in Anambra state.
“It would also appear that Miss Chidinma Okeke has become a pawn in a larger politically motivated conspiracy.
“The ABS as a socially responsible organisation fulfilled to the letter every part of the contract signed with Miss Chidinma Okeke, former Miss Anambra. This includes paying ALL her prize money of the sum of one million Naira only.
“This was paid in instalments in line with the contract. An initial sum of N500,000 was paid to her after she signed her contract and the balance of N500,000 was paid in N50,000 instalments over a 10 month period.
“She collected her last instalment of N50,000 on the 11th of October 2016, the day she handed over the crown to the organisers. We have records of her signing for all the payments.
“We had to take the measure of inviting the former Miss Anambra to the office on this date as that was the day an anonymous individual had forwarded the videos to myself and some other persons I do not know accusing the former queen of being a lesbian.
“The person said he was in possession of such similar videos numbering over 10 allegedly showing the former queen in lesbian acts, as well as her friends in the lesbian video performing sexual acts with men.
“Details of these WhatsApp messages have been made available to the law enforcement authorities. We took this decision as we did not want the brand to be smeared with such a scandal as contained in Clause 1 of the contract.

Someone on Twitter asked Trump in a Q & A session, a video of which was posted on Trump's Twitter account on September 21, 2015: '@realDonaldTrump, will you forgo the presidential salary if elected?'
Trump answered: 'As far as the salary is concerned — I won't take even one dollar. I am totally giving up my salary if I become president.
In the same video, Trump said he was 'totally self-funding' his campaign and said that he 'won't take money other than the small stuff'.
