Public secondary schools in Borno State to reopen two years after closure due to Boko Haram insurgency

Public secondary schools will be reopened on Monday, September 26th, two years after they were closed due to Boko Haram insurgency.

The public schools were shut in March, 2014, after suspected terrorists attacked a school in neighbouring Yobe. The government reopened the primary schools in 2015 but could not do so with the secondary schools because they had been taken over by IDPs
The state Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Inuwa Kubo, who disclosed this yesterday in Maiduguri, said that Internally Displayed Persons (IDPs) occupying the schools had been relocated to allow for resumption of academic activities.
He added that all the structures in the schools had been repaired to provide conducive environment for teaching and learning.
"I wish to announce that on Sept. 26, all public schools are going to be re-opened. I want to state that government has repaired all the structures damaged by the IDPs in the schools, to ensure comfort for the returning students. Parents and guardians should please make sure that they send their children back to school," he said.
The Commissioner described as unfortunate, the actions of  proprietors of private schools who took undue advantage of the development to hike their school fees.
"We understand that some of them have taken undue advantage of the closure of public schools to hike school fees; we will not allow the situation to continue. We are going to visit the schools to find out how much they are charging and how much they are paying their teachers."

Cultural festival turns bloody in Imo

Pandemonium broke out at the annual Ibo Uzo cultural festival of Umuezeala, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, this year, following the alleged murder of a native of Umuihim-Oki in Umualumaku/Umuihim autonomous community.

According to Vanguard, trouble started when a section of Ezeala-Ezike autonomous community opted to observe the festival outside the date chosen by the duly recognized traditional ruler.

It was also gathered that this section of the community is opposed to the appointment and recognition of a royal father outside their choice.

A villager, who pleaded anonymity said: “Some youths literally went wild, disrupting traffic, extorting money from motorists on the highway and splashing water and drinks on innocent commuters.”
While he spoke on how the 58-year old man died, the villager said that the deceased, who was identified as Njoku, came home from his base in Lagos and was trying to fix his Toyota Sienna at a workshop close to Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, when the irate youths struck.
“The youths wanted to dispossess the deceased of his handbag, which he stoutly resisted. One of the rampaging youths hit him on the back of his head.

“He slumped and started bleeding profusely.

A sympathetic citizen rushed the dying man to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he later died.”
Meanwhile, angry youths from the deceased’s home went to attack Umumanu Umuezeala-Ogwara, the home of the suspected killer of their son and destroyed lots of valuables.

While the two children were recovered dead from the incident which happened at the early hours of Saturday at their house along Trade Fair, Old Airport area of Sokoto, their mother later died on Sunday.

The fire was said to have been caused by an electrical fault that emanated within the apartment while powering their generating set.
According to an anonymous source, the deceased mother, alongside her husband and two older children, had initially escaped from the fire unhurt.
She was, however, said to have later made a brave and desperate attempt to save the younger children who were still trapped inside the burning house.

The two children were identified as her nine years old son and nephew According to eyewitnesses, the burning roof suddenly collapsed on the deceased woman as she attempted taking the children to a safer place.

Driver arraigned for stealing boss’s ATM card, withdrawing N2.7m in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a driver, identified as Mayowa Adenuga, for allegedly stealing his boss’s Automated Teller Machine, ATM, card, and withdrawing over N2.7m.

The card belonged to his employer, a lecturer at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Prof. Simbo Banjoko.

Two other suspects, 18-year-old Adewale Opeyemi and and 29-year-old Jeremiah Iyitoye were arrested alongside Adenuga as accomplices.

According to Punch, the 25-year-old Adenuga, who is also a computer expert, drove his boss to the Bells University on the day of the incident.

It was gathered that while he waited for his boss on the university premises, the driver found Banjoko’s Zenith Bank ATM card in the car and hid it.
Unknown to the victim that his ATM card was missing, Adenuga used software to uncover the card’s PIN code.
According to the report, the suspect withdrew N200,000 from the bank account through the ATM, and allegedly bought four iPhones, valued at N495,000; one Macbook laptop, valued at N415,000; 10 wristwatches, a Blackberry and a ring.

He made a total withdrawal of N2,728,255 from the victim’s bank account.

The lecturer later informed the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, of the incident and the case was later transferred to the Anti-Vice Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

A source at the SCIID said that Adenuga, perfected the crime by blocking his boss’s telephone line so that he would not see the alert of transactions conducted on his account.
He said, “The suspect is the lecturer’s driver. He is also a computer expert. He hid the ATM card for three days and when he saw that the man did not look for it, he used software to get the PIN. He called Adewale (Opeyemi) and handed over the card to him for safekeeping, saying it belonged to his sister.

“When he drove his boss out again at another time, he had access to the man’s phone and deliberately entered the wrong PUK number three times which led to the blockage of the line.”
After blocking his boss’s line, Adenuga allegedly asked his accomplices to make transactions with the card on his behalf.
The two men were said to have gone to Shoprite, Ikeja, and Mega Plaza, Victoria Island, where they withdrew N200,000 and purchased the iPhones, Macbook laptop, wristwatches and other items through POS transactions.

A police source explained that Banjoko, who noticed that his telephone line had been blocked, took it to a telecoms centre, where it was reactivated.
“At that point, he received 30 alerts that a total of N2,728,255 had been withdrawn from his account. He reported the matter to the police, and the case was transferred to the RRS.
“When the matter got to the Anti-Vice Section of the SCIID, the police arrested the driver and after interrogation, he confessed to the crime and named his accomplices.

“The police recovered two iPhones 6 Plus, two iPhone SSE, one Macbook laptop, seven GT Shock wristwatches, one Blackberry Z10, one ring and two bags,” the source added.
The three men were on Friday brought before a Yaba Magistrate’s Court on two counts of stealing.
The charge read in part, “That you, Mayowa Adenuga, Adewale Opeyemi and Jeremiah Iyitoye, on July 2, 2016, on Olanireti Fesan Street, Magodo, Isheri, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal the sum of N2,728,255 only, property of one Professor Simbo Banjoko.”
According to the police, the offence was punishable under sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011

The defendants however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Erinle, admitted them to bail in the sum of N800,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She added that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the defendants, who must be a landlord within the jurisdiction of the court.

The case was adjourned till October 17, 2016

Worst Nigerian better than the best Kenyan – Fani-Kayode

Former aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has stated that Kenya is far behind Nigeria in all ramifications.

The former minister was saying this in defence of his country in the ongoing war between Nigeria and Kenya on Twitter.

The battle began following unclear reports and speculations which trailed the movement of Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, between Nigeria and Kenya.

Fani-Kayode, who lent his voice via his official Twitter account, @realffk, pointed out that Kenyans were far behind Nigerians in every aspect.
He said, “Truth is that the Kenyans are very far behind us in every respect. I know their history inside out: they are just too small for us.

“Kenyans should stop attacking Nigeria on twitter. They must know their place. Truth is the worse Nigerian is better than the best Kenyan.

“When Kenyan leaders were still doing ‘mau mau’, swinging from trees and eating one another ours were at Oxford and Cambridge university.”

A woman who died in a parachuting accident on Saturday lived life to the full and died doing what she loved, her cousin has said.

Pamela Gower, who was from Hebburn in South Tyneside, described herself as a “crazy trainee skydiver” and had posted various pictures of herself taking part in the extreme sport on Facebook.
“She certainly lived life to the full, that’s for sure,” her cousin, Anthony Cairns, wrote on the site. He added that he felt great sadness at the death of his “lovely cousin”.

He said: “Just makes you aware that you have to make the most of life as you have no idea when it is likely to be taken away from you. She was doing exactly that I guess, doing what she loved.
“RIP Pamela Gower, we will all always love you so much.”

In her profile picture on the site, Gower is seen grinning and dressed in parachuting gear with the caption: “Nothing makes me more happy than skydiving, can’t wait for the next jump.”
The 49-year-old had previously trained and jumped with the Skydive Academy, which also organised this weekend’s excursion, to raise money for charity. According to her Just Giving page, she managed to raise nearly £1,000 for Cancer Research by jumping from 15,000ft.
Gower worked as an employment adviser for Remploy, an organisation that provides employment placements for disabled people.

She died after her parachute failed to open during a jump on Saturday. She was rushed to hospital by air ambulance after landing in a housing estate in County Durham on Saturday afternoon, and taken into intensive care, but later died.

The coroner has been informed and a postmortem will be carried out. Durham police said the death would be investigated by authorities, including the British Parachute Association.
A Remploy spokesman said: “We are shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Pam’s tragic accident. Pam worked most recently as an employment adviser in our Newcastle branch, supporting disabled people into work.

“She had worked for the company for many years and was a valued and respected member of the Remploy team. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and work colleagues past and present. We will be offering whatever support is required at this very difficult time.”
