The insurgents also injured scores of residents, destroyed many houses and vehicles in the council headquarters and as well abducted some youth.
An eye witness who narrowly escaped the attack and did not want his name mentioned for security reasons told our correspondent that the incident took place the day governor Kashim Shettima was billed to pay his campaign visit to southern part of the state including Shani, but had to suspend the visit following tension in most of the areas mapped out for the visit.
Shani is south, and about 240 kilometres drive form Maiduguri, the state capital and has witnessed series of attacks including the razing down of the Divisional Police Headquarters in the council.
A senior Police officer from Shani who is not authorized to talk to the press confirmed the incident to our reporter on phone, revealing that he has also fled the town for his own safety, as his family have been relocated to a safer zone since December, 2014.
“Yes there has been deadly attacks in Shani since Wednesday to Thursday morning. 9 people were slaughtered after the destruction of property worth millions of naira by the insurgents. The situation is very bad as we cannot confront them, and you know that Shani council area lacks security operatives as well as members of vigilante youth (civilian JTF), ” the officer stated.
