Uefa says Ibrahimovic could face further action after red card

Uefa will meet on March 19 to decide whether Zlatan Ibrahimovic will face further punishment after his sending-off against Chelsea on Wednesday.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker was dismissed after 31 minutes of his side’s 2-2 Champions League draw which saw them progress to the quarter-finals on away goals.

And while the nature of his challenge on Chelsea’s Oscar left many questioning whether the Swede would face any suspension, Uefa has confirmed that he could be forced to sit out for longer than the mandatory one match.

“According to the regulations, a red card automatically means at least a one-match ban,” confirmed a Uefa spokesperson.

“The Uefa Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will meet on March 19 to deal with this case, in other words they will take a decision on whether the player is suspended for only one match or for more.”

The quarter-final draw on March 20 will determine who PSG face next, with the French champions knowing already that they will be without their figurehead striker for at least the first leg of the last-eight contest.
