Akinniyi Emmanuel Fadipe works at the First Consultants Hospital in Lagos where the disease was first recorded in Nigeria.
Fadipe is expected to visit San Antonio’s BioBridge Global on Tuesday, February 24 where he will donate blood and likely participate in research that could improve treatment options for Ebola patients.
The blood sample will be taken in BioBridge Global’s South Texas Blood & Tissue Center after which it will be screened by QualTex Laboratories, a BioBridge subsidiary, to see if Fadipe qualifies for the research project which is ongoing at XBiotech in Austin.
The Medical Director for BioBridge Global, Rachel Beddard has said that Fadipe’s visit is critically important because he “was in the trenches, treating Ebola patients at ground zero in Nigeria.”
On his part, Fadipe said the visit to donate blood is a “small price to pay” if the result saves lives.
Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer arrived Lagos with Ebola in July 2014 and was admitted at the First Consultant Hospital.
Nigeria recorded 21 cases of the disease and 9 deaths before being declared Ebola-free on October 20.
